With few exceptions, Amnesty International has accused EU governments of being cowardice for failing to stand up and act in defence of human rights and international law, launching their new annual report.
EU governments have been accused of being cowards for failing to stand up and act in defence of human rights and international law, with only a few notable exceptions, according to Amnesty International.
“The era of the predators is on us, and with it, the era of the coward,” Agnès Callamard, who heads the NGO, told reporters on Monday (20 April).
Speaking ahead of the official launch of Amnesty’s Global Report on Human Rights, published later on Tuesday, Callamard listed US president Donald Trump, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russia’s president Vladimir Putin as among the worst global predators.
“Rather than confront those predators, the majority of governments, most notably European governments, opted instead for appeasement,” she said.
“Some even sought to imitate the bullies and the looters. Others chose silence and ducked for cover. Only a mere handful chose to stand up,” she said.
Arm exports to Israel by Germany, France and the United Kingdom, for instance, continue despite widespread crimes and violations in Gaza, which Amnesty, and many others, has described as a genocide.
European government appeasement towards Israel has sparked criticism of double-standards given their almost universal widespread disdain and sanctions against Putin and his war in Ukraine.
