North Macedonia’s new Chief Prosecutor, Nenad Saveski, has made a decision that could determine the fate of two of the country’s most sensitive cases, both of which target the alleged illegal financing of the governing party.
North Macedonia’s new Chief Prosecutor, Nenad Saveski, did not wait long after he was appointed last month to make a move that could decide the fate of two of the country’s most politically sensitive cases.
Saveski decided to remove prosecutor Lence Ristoska from the high-profile cases known as ‘Talir 1’ and ‘Talir 2’ – both of which target alleged the illegal financing of the main ruling VMRO DPMNE party.
His decision injects fresh uncertainty into proceedings that have already suffered from years of delay.
The clock is running down, as the statute of limitations in one of the cases is expected to expire in August, so Saveski’s move raises questions about whether the cases can realistically be carried forward to their conclusion within the timeframe.
