Authorities in Turkey are increasingly using court-ordered content restrictions to curb press freedom and shut down the social media accounts of journalists. This can be particularly disruptive in an age when social media have become a vital artery for many journalists’ work.

In our interview this week, Rusen Takva, a Kurdish investigative reporter, highlights his own plight. Arbitrary restrictions with little or no justification make it close to impossible to challenge court orders, he explains. Takva argues also that repressive measures used against journalists in Turkey typically are “tested” first on Kurdish journalists.
