Kosovo’s rival political leaders are already slipping into election campaign mode, trading blame and barbs for their failure to find a new president for the country.
The moment crunch talks between Albin Kurti and Lumir Abdixhiku ended, the blame again began.
Kosovo’s prime minister and the leader of the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo, LDK, had met on Monday morning to seek a way out of a political impasse over the choice of Kosovo’s next president and avoid yet another parliamentary election.
They failed, leaving a new election the most likely outcome.
“We agreed to not meet any more and we don’t have a reason to meet because we spent 53 days looking for a solution and couldn’t find one,” Abdixhiku said after talks broke up.
Minutes later, Kurti, leader of Kosovo’s ruling Vetevendosje [Self-Determination] party, said he had offered LDK control of four cabinet ministries and the post of deputy minister; he then threw in the position of parliament speaker. To no avail.
