With Hungary’s Orban Out, North Macedonia has a Gruevski Conundrum

In appearing to call time on Nikola Gruevski’s refuge in Hungary, election-winner Peter Magyar has put North Macedonia’s government in a tight spot.

Having led Hungary’s opposition Tisza party to victory in last weekend’s election, Peter Magyar wasted little time in sending a message to the likes of Poland’s Zbigniew Ziobro and Marcin Romanowski, as well as North Macedonia’s Nikola Gruevski.

“Hungary will not serve as a hideout for internationally wanted criminals,” he told a press conference with international media on Monday. “This applies not only to the former Polish ministers but also to Nikola Gruevski. After all, he is the former prime minister of North Macedonia and a wanted criminal.”

All three men found refuge in Viktor Orban’s Hungary from corruption charges in their respective states.

But while the Polish government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk is unlikely to have any qualms about bringing Poland’s former justice minister, Ziobro, and his deputy to trial for their alleged wrongdoings while the rival Law and Justice party was in power, North Macedonia’s ruling centre-right VMRO DPMNE may look differently on the return of its former leader, Gruevski.
